We all love to sail but the theory knowledge is just as important as the practical skills
Learning the theory can be tedious to many people. They just want to get out on the water and “do it”!
Unfortunately, this does not just create bad sailors, it creates dangerous ones!
The theory knowledge, which is put into practice as part of the practical courses, is essential if anything is to be gained from taking the practical courses. Having been set a task by your instructor at sea to navigate to a particular bay, imagine your difficulty in achieving the task if you had no idea what a Marine Chart, Portland plotter or dividers were, or no idea of depth soundings, or navigation buoys, or weather forecasting. There would be a real and present danger of running the vessel aground!
Within the RYA Yachtmaster (Sail) Scheme there are 4 Theory Courses available. All can be taken in our open air classroom, with magnificent views of the Antiguan hillside. 3 can be taken as Online Home Study delivered by Navathome.com, a RYA Recognised Training Centre specialising in online training. Some of us enjoy face to face tuition, and some enjoy sitting at a computer. The choice is yours. The courses are:
- Essential Navigation & Seamanship – A 16 hour introduction course.
- Day Skipper Theory – A week long intermediate navigation / collision regulations / meteorology course.
- Coastal Skipper & Yachtmaster Offshore – A week long advanced navigation / collision regulations / meteorology course.
- Yachtmaster Ocean – A week long specialised astro navigation / passage planning / yacht preparation / world meteorology course for global sailors.
