The biggest regatta in the Mediterranean.

The Barcolana regatta, named after the village of Barcola, started in 1969. It is now the biggest regatta anywhere in the Mediterranean and is one of the largest sailing races in the world with over 2000 participants. The regatta takes place in the Gulf of Trieste, which turns into the unofficial sailing capital of Europe for seven days.

The start line is traditionally underneath the Victory Lighthouse, built in 1927 to light the Gulf and serve as a monument to those killed in World War One. Everyone from brave amateurs all the way up to world-class helmsmen can take part in the race that is held annually on the second Sunday of October. Offering something for everyone the event includes a King of the Wind event in which people with disabilities race in specially adapted boats.
