National Sailing Academy of Antigua

The National Sailing Academy of Antigua & Barbuda has been established to encourage the youth of the nation to get involved in a sport that can teach them team work, the skills that could lead to employment in an industry that is key to the island’s economy, and the opportunity to compete in the sport at International events.

Young Antiguans from the age of 8 are taught to swim and gain confidence in, and around, the water – this education is important on an island surrounded by ocean! Once able to swim they are encouraged to join the dinghy sailing programme – run along the same guidelines used for RYA Training.

It is our intention for the Academy to gain recognition as a formal RYA Dinghy Training Centre at its new home in Falmouth Harbour. Then we shall be able to offer Dinghy Sailing Training to a much wider audience. The Academy is run on a voluntary basis, and is a recognised Charity. It is purely funded by donations from generous sponsors and fund raising events. Opening its doors to visitors for formal RYA Dinghy Training will be a further potential source of income that will help make the Academy self funding and continue the free training given to the youth of Antigua.

We must stress that Miramar Sailing School is an RYA Recognised Sail Training Centre not an RYA Recognised Dinghy Training Centre, however Brian & Pippa are actively involved as National Sailing Academy Directors, and are proud to offer their support by sponsoring these young dinghy sailors with RYA Sail Cruising courses to further their qualifications and experience.
