At our RYA Recognised Sailing School we offer both “Tidal” & “Non Tidal” Mile Building.

The waters around Antigua up to the BVI’s in the northern Caribbean, and St. Vincent to the south, are classified Non Tidal.

When we sail below St. Vincent, and into the Grenadines, the waters are classified as Tidal.

Non Tidal is not necessarily an issue when it comes to the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster qualifications as 50% of the qualifying mileage criteria can be in Non Tidal waters and 50% in Tidal waters.

However, we can only offer single Mile Building weeks around Antigua, as it takes almost 2 days to sail non stop to St. Vincent in order to reach Tidal waters.

For this reason Tidal Mile Building is offered as a module within our “Yachtmaster Xpress” Package that is a minimum of 2, but preferably 5 weeks. You do not have to be a “Yachtmaster Xpress” student to join a Tidal Mile Building Passage, as there are occasions when space is available.

One of the criteria for the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Ocean qualification is a 600nm non stop passage during which the student must have taken, and calculated, astro navigation data for presentation at examination. We have been given permission by the RYA to use the course of the RORC Caribbean 600 for this passage. That is a challenge in itself!
